Your wheels will eventually take a beating. You can’t ignore the scratches or dents on your wheels.

What can you do to help?

You have two options when a wheel is damaged: it can be fixed or it can be replaced . You can decide which option is best for you by knowing what to look out for and what your ideal outcome.

Rim or Wheel?

You may notice that people often use the terms rim and wheel interchangeably when getting to know their car. However, they are not the same thing.

A wheel is the whole metal component that holds your tire. A rim, on the other hand, is the edge of the metal part closest to your tire.

Many wheels come as one piece. However, multi-piece wheels can be made up of separate parts that can be adjusted or swapped. These components often include the hub and spokes, barrel or bowl, and rim. The rim is usually what is damaged when you knock a wheel onto something like a curb.

Some people claim they scratched their wheels, but others assume they meant that the whole assembly was a wheel. This confusion is why they are so confused.

Inspect Your Wheels

You may notice a change in your driving depending on how damaged your wheels are.

Road vibrations can be caused by deep dents and other issues. These should be addressed immediately. Even minor, unfelt damage can cause more problems and should be addressed immediately.

Taking a Billet wheel is more expensive. These wheels are made from a block of specially formulated material and then cut the wheel from it. Although the material is extremely strong and tightly bound, it can be difficult to make a wheel. It takes a lot of time and money.

You may want to consider the possible outcome depending on the manufacturing process. Cast products can bend easily but weld repairs won’t properly bond. CnC parts can be harder to repair because of their purity.

Coatings

You will need to inspect the part to determine if it needs to be re-coated.

Metal bends when it is stretched. The coating or paint on top will often not flex at this rate, and may chip or fall off.
